Pear and Kiwi Jam
Interesting mix, huh?
This jam goes well with bread. You can have it alone with bread, or use it as “jelly” in a peanut butter and “jelly” sandwich. It’s delicious and fruity, and can be used when you need to make a quick breakfast on the run.
The color is a very, very pale green. If you want to make the color more vibrant, add a drop of food coloring. However, I...

Brown Rice and Whole Wheat Couscous Salad
This Brown Rice and Whole Wheat Couscous Salad made for such a delicious meal. It’s easy enough to make when you have the leftover ingredients. For example, this dish utilizes the black beans left over from the Slow-Cooked Lechon Pork, infusing the grains with a very satisfying, wholesome taste. In addition to the black beans, this “salad” also makes use of the very much leftover...

Chewy Whole Wheat Matcha Cookies with Matcha Chips...
Beware: These cookies are abnormally thin! I was so surprised! Nevertheless, they are so delicious. And I don’t normally like chewy cookies.
Variation 1: Whole Wheat Matcha Cookies topped with Matcha Chips
Pictured with the Amigurumi Teddy I crocheted for Wasc.
Variation 2: Whole Wheat Matcha Cookie with Sliced Almonds.
Very delicious with some hot tea.

Flower "Elixer" (Essences)
I’ve been seeing a lot of recipes with hibiscus flowers and other flowery essences recently. They looked so delicious and flowery that I really wanted to try to make them; however, I’m not really sure of where I can purchase Hibiscus flowers here. Soooo, imagine how excited I got when I found this on Fab.com by The Lounging Gourmet!
I am especially excited to try the Andean Fire...

Early Valentine Dinner: Part 2 (Red Velvet Ice...
For Wasc’s return to the U.S., I planned a delicious dinner complete with a superfluous dessert. Actually, Wasc returned a couple of weeks ago but we had both been busy so he hadn’t the chance to come up to visit yet. This dinner was prepared for our reunion. I planned out a dessert made of several parts—half red velvet frozen custard, half Guinness red velvet cake with whipped...

Early Valentine Dinner: Part 1 (South American...
Part 1? What’s Part 2 then? DESSERT. Yeah. Be ready.
I made this delicious dinner for Wasc when he came to visit me. He was surprised that I had made lechon using a slow cooker. I’ve never had lechon before, so…? :) Apparently, lechon is usually roasted—at least Wasc has only ever had lechon roasted.
Using the slow cooker was a great idea though, the pork just falls apart...

Pomegranate Tofu with Pink Lentil Crust
For dinner…For lunch…Even breakfast(?). I don’t think I would eat this for breakfast, just like I wouldn’t eat congee for breakfast. But maybe it fits you. So, what is this and how does it taste?
Tastes like cinnamon. I think I put a dash too much cinnamon in it. Oops! It was still good regardless. The pink/red lentil powder topping provides a nice contrast to the softness...

Antioxidant Packed Bloody Salad with Blueberry...
The salad doesn’t look bloody in the first photograph because I did not drizzle the “dressing” over the greens yet.
This is a very refreshing salad that reminds me of summertime due to the presence of red anjou pears, blood oranges, blueberries (all packed full of antioxidants! —So good for you) and greens.
I had originally planned to have this salad with just lettuce,...

(Eggless) Kiwi and Blueberry Almond Whole Wheat...
Be careful with these. They are so delicious and healthy you will end up eating half the batch in one go. Like I did…. :P
I made 3 different types of these muffins: topped with a blueberry, topped with some sliced almonds, and topped with nothing.
Happy eatings!

Grapefruit and Lavender Infused Sorbet
This sorbet is so light and refreshing with a sweet and tangy taste from the freshly squeeze grapefruit juice, yet mysterious/musky flavor from the infused lavender. The color is a beautifully pale pink. The texture perfect—like newly fallen snow.
For those who stay away from grapefruit because of its bitterness, there is no bitterness to this sorbet! This grapefruit and lavender infused...

Sesame Somen with 2 Types of Kale, Assorted Asian...
This was me missing Japan. Wasc and I traveled to Japan last June (oh-my-it-was-so-hot-and-humid, and I live in a place where the summers are hotter than Tokyo and the humidity almost nearly reaches that of Tokyo in the summertime). I miss the food, the oh-so-delicious and good-for-you food. Eating out in Japan never gave me tummy aches like I usually get when I eat out in the U.S. The food there...

Crispy Eggplant Fritters with Mozzarella + Lemon...
What a long title!!! No, your eyes are not deceiving you…This post has THREE, count it—3— recipes! Are you shocked? Amazed? :)
The Lemon Black Tahini Yogurt Dipping Sauce works well for the the Crispy Eggplant Fritters with Mozzarella and the Gravlax! Or, you can eat the two plain. They are delicious either way.
Lets begin with some definitions so that you do not have to...

Healthy Chocolate Mint "Creme Fraiche"/"Mousse"
EDIT: I’ve finally put my finger on the texture/taste of this dessert! It very closely resembles an avocado smoothie. So, if you’re looking for a healthier alternative to an avocado smoothie, you’ve found it ;)
I’m in a bit of a dilemma on this dessert. (I know, in the last post I said that the Cherry and Almond Cookies were going to be the last sweets post in a while...

Whole Wheat Tart Cherry and Almond Cocoa Cookies...
Since the theme for Sabor Eats is “Sabor for the kitchen, tea for the soul,” I thought maybe I should finally post a dessert with tea. I love tea, it’s normally a staple drink for me. Have to have tea everyday. However, I’m a bit picky about my teas. They have to be loose leaf for a natural and bold flavor. Tea just tastes more fresh to me if it’s been steeped with...

Candied Watermelon Rind
Have you ever wondered if there was something you could make with all the watermelon rind that gets thrown in the trash after eating juicy watermelons? I always thought it was wasteful, but I wasn’t about to try eating them raw myself. Hahaha.
I was very surprised when I read about candying the watermelon rind. I thought, ‘What a great way to use up all of the watermelon!’ I...
Stuffed Squid with Soy Dipping Sauce
This is a Korean appetizer. It is a light and healthy squid stuffed with tofu, green/red chili, bean sprouts, spring onions, rice, and light meats.
I had plenty of leftover stuffing, so I used it to make stuffed onigiri!!! A Korean take on a Japanese rice ball. It turned out delicious (a plus also because it is healthy), but especially good when heated on a pan for a bit to get a crispy outside.

Asian Pear Frozen Yogurt
This Asian Pear Frozen Yogurt is as delicious and refreshing as it sounds. I’ve garnished mine with pomegranate seeds from my pomegranate bonzai plant. The fruits are VERY small, so the seeds are nice and and cute and pink! :)
Here’s something I learned, apparently Korean Pear does NOT equal Asian Pear…technically?? I grew up eating and calling the Korean Pear an “Asian...

Cha Siu Bao with Passion Fruit Hoisin Sauce -...
Over winter break I was really craving some cha siu bao. Unfortunately, while in Hong Kong this summer, I was not able to try any, so the craving was really coming on strong now!
My mom and I made these ourselves. We didn’t make it using our own flour though. Mom usually uses pre-bought packaged cha siu bao flour (Click the link for an image—the packaged flour is actually for banh...

Remake of Ferrero Rocher Cheesecake - Two Ways

Persimmon Sorbet with Sautéed Honey Persimmon
Be prepared to be bombarded with recipes for sorbet, gelato, and frozen yogurt very soon in the future. I have stocked my parent’s freezer with various types of frozen goodies!
First on the list: Persimmon Sorbet. I think this particular sorbet is very Asian. Whenever I think of persimmon, I think of a beautiful tree that grows sweet, fat, delicious fruits. We have a persimmon tree in our...

Grilled Loin of Pork
Hello everyone, this is Wasc. I have been in Bolivia for the past couple of weeks to spend the holidays with my wonderful family. I have been cooking many dishes with my mom, Frida, but this is the first one we fully documented (I will work on the others to make sure they are easy to follow).
So today seemed like it was going to be a sunny day in La Paz and we decided to grill a loin of pork. If...

Mousse de Maracuya (aka Passion Fruit Mousse)
This is probably one of my favorite desserts. I first ate it at a Brasilian restaurant and was so happy that the “mousse” was actually a mousse. Often, a dessert is mislabeled mousse when it is actually more like pudding/custard. One of my pet peeves is to dig my spoon into a “mousse dessert” I have ordered, only to find out that it is not mousse… A mousse needs to be...

Semi Low-Fat Ferrero Rocher and Nutella Cheesecake
OK, so this cheesecake also seemed to be a pretty big hit. The one problem I came upon is while unmolding the cheesecake (I deviated from the recipe in that I did not make it with graham crackers), the crust did not want to follow. At least 80% of the crust did not want to follow. It turned out alright thought, as I put the crust back in the oven for about 10 minutes to make it more crispy and...

Lychee Panna Cotta with Pomegranate Gelatin and...
I love panna cotta. Wascar first introduced it to me at one of our first home-cooked fancy dinners (though it wasn’t really cooking together because we cooked in our own separate apartments and brought the food to one place). Ever since, I’ve been meaning to try different panna cotta recipes, there are just SO many variations! Unfortunately, I cannot make panna cotta too often because...

Kasutera/Castella (Japanese Sponge Cake)
I’ve always wanted to try kasutera, ever since I’ve seen it in Japanese shows. I’ve been curious about its soft, spongy characteristics. I’ve eaten very spongy cakes before, but never moist, soft, spongy cakes. I’m very picky when it comes to “moist” because most people imply that to also mean soft. The word moist just means to be wet. To me, the cake has...
Bok Choy and Lotus Root Tacos PLUS Couscous with...
Finals time dinner. Lots of vegetables on this taco. Actually, it is vegetarian taco if you do not make the turkey bacon. This taco is very easy and quick to make. I’m not sure on the measurements of seasonings and ingredients because I only eyeballed, so there will only be pictures today!
This taco was made with lightly stir-fried bok choy with lotus roots. I sprinkled the bottom of the...

Slow-cooker Shiitake and Bella Mushroom(s)...
Making lasagna from scratch is a bit time consuming. It’s even worse when you have only one pot and need to cook the lasagna pasta and béchamel sauce. Feel free up the amount of mushrooms as you like. I certainly did because I looooove shiitake mushrooms. :D Also, for this lasagna recipe, since I also love the smell of sauteed onions, I probably used more than they called for—so...

Dulce de Leche Rice Pudding (attempt with...
EDIT: I managed to make it work! Actually, it turns out the the dulce de leche dessert needs WAY more milk and needs to cook way longer. I don’t remember how much milk I put in, but I think it was at least 1 cup more. I also stood there for a long while stirring so it wouldn’t burn to the bottom of the pot. It was delicious and the rice was so perfectly cooked. I will have to make this...

Guinness and Bailey's Ganache-Filled Cupcakes
Hey everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything because I’ve been so busy with school! Studying is hard. ;)
I made these cupcakes recently and it seemed to be a big hit! So here is the recipe for those who want it (in the “Read More” section after all the pictures)
I had extra cupcakes (and no ganache! :( ), so I scooped out the center and filled...

Tarragon Flounder on a Bed of Rice with Roasted...
Sorry, no story today. This dish was delicious though. You can choose whatever veggies to put on the side. I only had avocados, tomatoes, and lettuce, but feel free to substitute with all sorts of vegetables! The flavors mixed very well together, and the color came out beautifully! I squeezed the lemon wedge mostly over the avocado and tomatoes, reserving just a little bit for the flounder. I just...

Peruvian Steamed Flounder (Pescado Sudado)
For the past year I’ve been craving South American dishes like crazy. So today I made some Puscado Sudado, which is Peruvian style steamed fish.
I topped one fillet with the chili pepper, and one with shredded coconut just to have a nice mix of fillets. The dish is really good, yet light on the tummy! I served my pescado sudado with piña-papaya con leche boba smoothie...

Refreshing Kiwi Sorbet
I know it’s autumn already, and what am I thinking, making delicious frozen desserts in the cold?! Well, let me just say, desserts are good anytime. Just not in large quantities the night you’re cramming/studying for an exam. You’d/I’d pass out into a food coma.
I like sorbets because they are refreshing and they don’t use heavy cream. This means healthier, leaner,...

Light Pan-fried Lemon (Asian) Chicken Nuggets
This was the first time I had tried making chicken nuggets. After watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution episode on how they make chicken nuggets, I thought I’d never eat nuggets again. One year ago, I gave up eating fast food with Wasc. It was probably one of the best decisions in my life. Fresh, homemade food just tastes so much better. You just feel better after eating...
Finally...
I had been talking about starting a food blog for long enough. Well, I finally picked a domain and chose a name! Wasc and I had discussed starting a food blog chronicling our travels around the world tasting different foods for a while, and now it’s being realized. In addition to chronicling our adventures, we will be posting recipes that we have either created ourselves or have adapted from...
A Humble Start
One gets to know a lot of people in college who ultimately inspire trips, foster friendships, and teach you a thing or two about looking at life from different perspectives. My girlfriend and I have enjoyed exploring the food and culture of many countries through our friends, their stories, and their recipes. This is, we hope, the start of a blog where we document our excursions through the tastes...
